Discover Inner Peace Through A Course in Miracles

If you are unfamiliar with A Course in Miracles, you might want to read the questions and answers below. You can also visit our blog to find short articles explaining many of the core ideas in the Course.

“Pain thresholds can be high, but they are not limitless. Eventually, everybody begins to recognize, however dimly, that there must be a better way. As this recognition is more firmly established, it becomes a perceptual turning point. This ultimately reawakens the spiritual eye, simultaneously weakening the investment in physical sight.” [CE T-2.VI.8:2-5]

What is A Course in Miracles?

A Course in Miracles is a spiritual path that trains us to distinguish between the unreal and the real, illusion and truth, the thought system of fear and the thought system of love. We gradually learn to shift from the ego’s false perception to the true perception to which we are guided by our Inner Teacher, the Holy Spirit. The Course teaches an advanced version of forgiveness that results in the healing of our perception of others, and, by extension, of ourselves. This “miraculous forgiveness” is the central means taught in the Course to heal our sense of separation and enables us to see beyond the veil of illusion — to the truth of who we are and our neverending oneness with God — and to realization of our shared holiness, equality and worth.

“Miraculous forgiveness involves only correction. It has no element of judgment at all. “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do” in no way evaluates what they do. It is strictly limited to an appeal to God to heal their minds. There is no reference to the outcome of their misthought. This does not matter.” [CE T-3.II.6]

The Course consists of three main volumes (bound in one book). The first volume of the Course is the “Text.” This is the longest of the three volumes (926 pages) and introduces students to its unique, valuable, and healing ideas — ideas that need to be carefully studied so they will be correctly understood. Volume two is the “Workbook for Students” that consists of 365 lessons which instructs students in the application and use if its ideas, for “the ideas are mighty forces, to be used and not held idly by.” [CE T-16.II.10:4]. Finally, the third volume is the “Manual for Teachers” which is primarily focused on those who are ready to embrace the role of miracle worker or teacher — fulfilling their function of extending and demonstrating to others the very ideas studied in the Text and used in the Workbook.

What is meant by a “miracle” in A Course in Miracles?

The conventional or traditional understanding of a miracle is something that transcends the laws of nature.  These would include the healing of an incurable condition, walking on water, raising the dead, and controlling the weather.  The Course does not deny that such miracles occur.  However, its view of miracles is less physical and more psychological and relational.  The two main ways the Course defines a miracle is as 1) a healing of perception (the psychological aspect of the miracle) and 2) an expression of love (the relational aspect of the miracle).  The primary way a miracle is presented in the Course is an expression of love from one person to another — from a miracle worker to a miracle receiver — that is typically the result of the Course’s approach to forgiveness. So, These miracles as expressions of love result from Course-based forgiveness and result in the healing of the mind of both the receiver and giver of the miracle.
